Release details for 2014 here http://www.snowyhydro.com.au/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/watrel/SN_DT.pdf

First opportunity is Fri 29 Aug 14.  I will be driving down on Thurs night and doing two runs.

Peak release is smaller than last year although 9,703ML/day (112.3m3/s) should still be a massive level on Tues 14 Oct 14.  Put your leave apps in ;D

Grif

I'm keen if you think I'm up to it.  I'm out of action for the next bit, had some minor surgery on my hand, but I'll be well and truly good to go by August.

Hey fellow kayakers,

Was just wondering how an old (2007 - 2009?) Jackson Rocker would go down the Snowy?

Getting a tad bit more confident and want to amp it up a bit.

Mate

Really depends on who is paddlin it.  The Snowy (Baloka section) is a big volume grade three river. If you wanted to join a trip your skill would need to be known to the group members. What rivers have you paddled recently? Who have you paddled with recently? Not being a snob.  Happy to have new paddlers along - just need to ensure that they have the required level of skill for the section that we are paddling.

I'm not an idiot. Was just asking a simple question.....

Yes i'm equipped for a snowy run. I have at least 2 to 3 years doing grade 3's.

I can hold my own.

Was wondering how well my rig would go, otherwise i'll go the Riot or Hero....

I don't take people being presumptuous very well.

Mate,

I think the safety of any crew is important, and if you were running a trip and I asked to come along without you knowing me, I would expect questions to be asked.

Griff is one of the most active paddlers in Canberra, and also the keenest to have new paddlers along, he's put countless hours volunteering his time for beginners, I don't think what he wrote he was calling you an idiot in any way.

I think your rocker would be fine.

Cheers

Mick

Yes, i know Griff is good to know with his posts.

Wasn't impressed with his last one though.

Mate your statement ''Getting a tad bit more confident and want to amp it up a bit" gave me reason to incorrectly believe that your paddling skills were still in the beginners league. I also incorrectly presumed that you may have been seeking to join one of our trips on the river. Hence the questions about your skill and experience.

In relation to boat design.  All is good.  A play boat has been successfully paddled through that section.

Totally agree with mick and griff. Never taken offense at being asked about my paddling experience prior to paddling with paddlers I don't really know. If your potentially paddling with me I would be asking the same questions. It's not about paddling snobbery. It's about minimizing the risks  to all paddlers on any trip.

A good boater would get down this run in a turd.  Asking how your boat would go down the run does suggest people will be cleaning up your gear the whole way down. I'm not sure what section of the snowy you guys are talking about but I would be shitting myself on most of the sections if my only experience prior was "at least 2 or 3 years doing grade 3's" [sic]

The boat really doesn't matter.

The important question is how long can you hold your breath?

Thinking of a pub dinner and then sleeping in the back of the prado.
