5  General / General Paddling Talk / Upper Molonglo Guide on: December 14, 2014, 04:41:10 PM
After running this section last Sunday, I have had a few people ask me about it. Here is a guidebook style write-up. If there is anything missing or anything that needs to be changed, reply below. Does anyone have information for the gauge?

Upper Molonglo River

Grade: Mostly 3+ with a couple of 4 sections
Gauge:
Length: 4km
Time: 2-4 hours depending on knowledge of the section
Gradient: 30m/km in the steepest section
Put in: Park cars at the end of Weetalabah Drive (left off the Kings Highway after leaving Queanbeyan and heading towards Bungendore). Walk through the paddock on the north-east side of the road end and then over the small hill and down to the river (Warning: this may be private property).
Take out: Molonglo Gorge Picnic area.
Shuttle: 10 minutes through Queanbeyan.
Kayak type: Creek boat
Character: Steep, technical and multi-channel creeking with tea-tree mazes in-between rapids.
Warnings:
A lot of tea-tree to navigate through.
There are some steep sections: on high flows the rapids may become long with few eddies.
There is potential for trees and large branches to collect in some eddies and drops.
Escape route: Walking track on river right side of the gorge.
Hot Tip: This is a long run with a short shuttle.

Description: With the demise of the Upper Cotter this should be one of the most sought after runs in the Canberra region for experienced paddlers! This section of the Molonglo River has numerous creek-style drops, some difficult portages, tea-tree mazes and all in a steep and rather remote feeling gorge.

After making your way down to the water via the grade 4 walk in, the river gives you time to warm up on a 1 km long section of grade two with bunches of tea-trees to navigate your way through.

Once you hit some large rocks in the middle of the river, the gradient will increase and the river changes character to something a bit steeper and more fun. Take your time to scout what is ahead; this may mean getting out of the boat and viewing what is downstream whilst on your legs. This is important as the river now had a number of different channels and blind corners. In this section there will be a number of drops up to 3 metres.

In a little while you will come to the crux rapid. This is a three stage rapid. Firstly there is a 4 to 5 metre drop with an easy lead-in, after a short landing there are two river-wide holes, one after another. Finally, there is a long flat section to recover. Check out what is all about here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooZexkWOxys. Scouting can be done on either side and the portage is on the river right side.

At this point you are around half way through the run and there are a few grade 3+ rapids left to go. As mentioned earlier, continue to scout where need be as the river continues on with the same sort of character. There are also a lot of tea-tree mazes to get through.

The run ends at the Molonglo Gorge Picnic Area and this is marked with the end of the gorge on the river right side and flat water.

12  General / General Paddling Talk / The Upper Molonglo's crux rapid on: December 07, 2014, 10:14:54 PM
Duanne, Brad, Tom Rugg and myself had a fun trip into the Upper Molonglo this afternoon. The crux rapid halfway down is a massive double drop. Here is a video someone filmed a little while ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooZexkWOxys. It is a 4-5m drop with an easy lead-in, then a brief pool and finally a 1-2m ledge with a rather nasty and very wide hole. After this is a long flat section. It looked scary today so we all walked around.

I was wondering if it has ever been run before or is it a potential first descent for whoever feels like taking the risk? Has anyone here run it or seen someone run it? Is there video or photos of it being run?
