General Paddling Talk / Winge?!
« on: September 05, 2014, 02:48:40 PM »
Hey All,

I've been out of the Canberra group for a few years, (moved to sydney) but was thinking about trying to hit up the Winge on Sunday.  I've got another mate who'd be keen, with all his own gear and loads of experience, though not on this river.  I've done the Winge a couple of times, though years ago.  Just wanted to see if anyone else was thinking about trying to do it?

Of course, it would have to stay on the upside of about 1.10 to really make it worthwhile, but I think the showers in the catchment may continue, which gives us a chance that may happen. From previous experience 1.15-1.25 is probably ideal.

Anyone else (particularly those who've done it before, and familiar with the logistics of the massive shuttle etc) be interested?

General Paddling Talk / Re: Kangaroo River Rising!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: November 09, 2007, 05:59:36 PM »
Well it was a great paddle today... We did two runs, first one playing around a lot, from about 9:30am to about 11:45, and the second we just shot through in 45 minutes, off the river a bit before 1:30.  Water between 2.4 and 2.1 meters, quite a good height.  In particular, the long smooth wave under the cliff near the start was rather nice; easy to surf, but still fast and fun.

Paul, I hope you guys had fun too, unfortunately we had to get back to Canberra by six.

Anyone going tomorrow?  or Sunday?  I'd almost be tempted to ditch some study and go again.

Well, at 3.63m, I think there's a fair chance that it'll still be up above 1 tomorrow, which is when I'm planning to get onto it.  If anyone's interested, give me a call. 0400091770

I'd be very keen on a Kangaroo paddle.  Much more fun than Penrith.  I'd probably be keen Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

General Paddling Talk / Penrith trip Sunday
« on: November 06, 2007, 05:09:12 PM »
I'm thinking that I'll be doing a penrith trip this Sunday (11th), assuming nothing more exciting rises between now and then. (Btw, the Molongolo was a lot of fun last Sunday morning after the rain)  The water is on from 10:30 to 5 which is quite enough.  I'll be taking my car, leaving from ANU at 7am, and at this stage still have a couple of places.

Let me know if you're interested.

Cheers,

I hope it goes well, sorry I won't be able to make it.  Got to hand in three assignments tomorrow with any luck.

Btw, sweet photos on the Snowy Alex, I'm very keen to get into that at some stage.

General Paddling Talk / Re: Snowy - Charlottes to Guthega / 13 or 14 Oct

Thanks Chris.  Here's an excerpt from the bom for the Snowy Mountains Region:

"Current Weather Situation and Future Developments
A weak ridge of high pressure extends across the region bringing fine
conditions.  A trough of low pressure is building up over the centre of the
continent and will move across the region late Wednesday and Thursday bringing
scattered showers and thunderstorms. A series of cold fronts are expected over
the region Friday and into the weekend, bringing colder weather with showers and
snowfalls."

"Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers and snow showers about higher ground.  South to southwest
winds.
Thredbo Top Station Snow showers.                  Min:  -6 Max:   0"

So unless that turns around, on Chris's good advice I might have to give it a miss.

However, I do have a car (Nissan sedan, which is going well), and have some old-school roof-racks which have taken up to 5 boats in the past.  If you guys do get stuck for a car, let me know.  I could go for a run and do some physics study while you paddle, or get involved if the weather improves.  Or, depending on numbers, I could lend my car for the day.

Thanks Chris and Alex.  So it sounds like this section is a bit easier than the Munyang.  If it is fairly consistently drop-pool then I think I'd give it a go, but I'm guessing (Chis might be able to confirm/deny) that a swim would still be quite possibly dangerous on this section.  So my thought then at this stage is that it would be best to skill up some more, bomb-proof the roll before tackling this.  Alex knows my ability best, and if he's feeling it would be pushing it, I think I'll go with that.

Well it happens that I'm actually free this Sunday, so would be very interested in a paddle.  That said, this river does sound pretty big and challenging, and would probably be pushing my ability.  Also, I don't have the best gear (just hiring from ANU mountaineering), which introduces another element of doubt.  I'd like to hear any suggestions or more detailed comments about the river that anyone else has.  Alex has seen me paddle last, I'd happily take his advice.  I may well be looking at another paddle (maybe Winge) the following saturday, so I won't be devastated to miss it.  That said, a free Sunday, on an alpine river, in the right season, sounds like a pretty rare opp.

Sounds like a good idea to me.  I'd try to get along now and then, but don't think I could commit to a regular weekly.  Thurs arvos could be good.  Maybe a every 2 or three weeks?

Sorry to hear it, I hope the assignment goes well.  Depending on what this rain does, there's a small chance I might divert to a river, but more than likely not.

I could be interested in a paddle tomorrow afternoon, perhaps a quick trip down the upper bidgee?  I have a car and roof racks.  I've only done that stretch once though, so I'd want someone probably better experience than myself to lead.  drop me a line on 0400091770 if you're interested.
