General Paddling Talk / Caution around 'Bidgee trips
« on: June 06, 2016, 01:54:17 PM »
Though the usual bidgee gauges  (Mt Donald and Lobbs Hole) are falling or steady - there's a big pulse of flow coming from upstream see http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDN60237/IDN60237.570011.plt.shtml. There's also been quite a top up of rain in the upper catchment today (Monday) see http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR40C.loop.shtml#skip

Be careful out there. Bokkie

Anyone got the phone number(s) of the "Never Die" property - the river left pull out for the Shoalhaven Welcome Reef section?

Thanks in advance

I want to get my boat (and possibly one more) to Launceston from Canberra for 12 January. I have a rellie in Launceston so it can go earlier. I am happy to pay a fee.

Any other ideas are welcome - qantas and jetstar have said no to checked luggage due to plane size.

Thanks in advance

Seek Large creek boat in good condition.

see http://www.bom.gov.au/waterdata/

There's some nice options here for: working out what the flow was on the good/bad day,
working out the best season to visit and a few other trip planning tricks.

Cheers Nick

You were right on the Paddy's - though there is still something funny around that gauge.

Tim, Toby and I are keen to do the Paddy's next time it comes up.

Tim and I will do a local run on Sunday afternoon. We will check out the paddy's as we don't believe the gauge. (I have done it a few times). If that bombs we will hook around to Red Rocks. Call or text if u are interested 0407 228192 or leave a message here.

I'll be camped with the family at the take out (Island Bend - most upstream part - ~50 m from river) this weekend. I am interested in a Munyang run (I done it a few times).

We can also help with the shuttle.

Look for the silver Captiva with kayak and topoduo.

General Paddling Talk / Re: So what is the story on May - Sept flow?
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:54:19 AM »
South East Australia is quite unreliable on paddling flows by world standards. However there is some good paddling to be had especially in the "creek" category. Big rivers probably justifies a spring trip to New Zealand to sample the joys of the Buller and similar south Island rivers.

To be a little more quantitative about what is forecast in the coming 6 months - have a squizz at http://www.bom.gov.au/water/ssf/ This tool draws upon several medium term climate trends that affect Australia's rainfall and stream flow. The tool has a lot of good science behind it and could even influence decisions around travel within Aust and New Zealand.

One other  observation - if you are into warm water paddling then consider a trip to North Queensland (Tully, Johnston, Herbert - flying in to Cairn or Townsville) - the paddling is good, the weather is better and cheap air tickets can be found out of Canberra. Autumn, winter and spring usually have good paddling there.

General Paddling Talk / Re: gwydir feb 16/17 anyone?

On the shuttle: see https://sites.google.com/site/joyofflood/Joy-of-Flood/guide-book (Rob Hales knows the Gwydir but info may be a little dated)

On a river guide see http://www.adventurepro.com.au/paddleaustralia/pa.cgi?action=details&id=gwyd4#.URiJCB3qnUx (if you are desperate - I can identify the photos on this site)

It has been a few years since I paddled the Gwydir but here's a few memories:

The water is cold - think Munyang-cold
The first time shuttle is tricky without an old hand
The first three rapids "The Troubles" - just around the corner from the put in are all ~4 with some big holes (esp at 6000 Ml/d - last visit)
The portages are easy - names "Saphire Falls" and "Dead End Falls". I think both have been paddled in low low flow.
Watch for "Big Mother" (folded flow), Umbrella falls (serious suck back) and Tombstone (pin/wrap potential)
Overall it is pushy 4/5 paddling with a lot a great rapids

I am interested in the helmet - if it will suit my fat head.

Can I give you a call tonight?
